Ep 1 - Inside vs. Outside
Hello World!
This show will explore various mental models that can help parse out the world. A longer description is in the 'About' section.
The concept of 'Inside' and 'Outside' exists for all encased things—coffee mugs, cars, houses, etc. But the most definitive one is YOU. It is the world outside vs. the world inside each of us. It's the great diving line of metaphysics—the Objective vs. Subjective.
Outside: Everything in the world around you can be thought of as an Object. This includes everything you can see, hear, touch, smell. Plus, those we can only detect with specialized scientific equipment. Together, these Objects make up our objective reality or the "Outside." And this reality is shared among all of us. When we look up at the night sky, we can all agree that we are all looking at the same Moon.
Inside: The "Inside" is you and your conscious experience. You are the Subject looking out at the world of Objects. Even though we all share the same Moon, when you look up at it, you have your own subjective experience of it—the way it makes you feel, the colors, the memories, etc. No one else will ever know what that experience feels like. It's absolutely unique to you.
Inside vs. Outside: Science deals with the world of Objects. By definition, science is only those ideas that are independently and objectively verifiable. An immense burden of proof is required to state that a scientific theory is True. If hard empirical measurements go against those projected by a theory, then the theory is wrong. Usually.
Religion/Spirituality is more fluid. It's inherently philosophical because it deals with each of our subjective and personal Truths. It deals with how we perceive and ascribe meaning to events. Unlike science, which describes how the world works, these philosophies prescribe how to engage with the world effectively.
